Nintendo Wii Emulation

The Wii is a game console made by Nintendo. It uses very similar hardware to that found in the Nintendo GameCube. So we should see an Emulator for the Nintendo Wii in the near future. The Nintendo Wii also allows you to play Nintendo GameCube games, which opens the Wii Console to a whole world of exploits, homebrew applications, and emulators that were originally designed and created for the GameCube. Using this knowledge all we have to do to get a Wii Emulator box going is use a GameCube exploit of choice.

Requirements for Nintendo Wii Emulation

You will need Datel’s Action Replay, software called SDload, the official Nintendo SD card adapter, and of course your Emulator of choice.

Running an Emulator on the Nintendo Wii

1) Plug your SD card into your computer and format the SD card to either FAT or FAT16, After formatting use SDload to run sdpatch.exe through the command line as follows:

sdpatch.exe (drive letter):/

Now copy SDLOADER.BIN to the root directory of the card, at this point you can load it up with Emulators .dol format. They can be in any directory as long as SDLOADER.BIN is in the root.

2) Insert SD card into your Nintendo Wii in memory slot A and the Action Replay Card into B. Slide your Action Replay disc into your Nintendo Wii.

3) When AR boots up pick the USA flag and then ADD NEW GAME. SDLOAD is the game name and push done. Then enter (M) as the code name. Enter the following code

7YPR-RKZZ-MH6W5
D26A-PE4J-1XX2W
ZJHY-B1ZH-6P00G

Then select ADD NEW CODE and name it SDLOAD. Enter the following code

AF4H-JPF5-H1B5J
MVAB-7TQE-ABZPB
V2CK-QQ1A-Y6P72
M5N6-CMMH-9EURT

Select the code named SDLOAD and check the box next to it, press start and Open and close the lid of disc drive when prompted. Then it starts up and you can take it from there and run any Emulator you want.

I was wondering if I could download a gamecube ISO and burn it onto a dvd and play it on the wii. I can’t try the above because I don’t own a action replay and an adapter for the sd. Thanks

I’m sorry I didn’t make it clear the first time, I meant could I burn a GameCube ISO onto a DVD disc and insert DVD into the wii and play the ISO.

  4. dbxz:

    nope sorry you can’t.

The Wii, or even a GC, will know its a copy and wont play it. Thats why you need the action replay or a modchip (no modchip for the Wii has yet been released).

Action Replay? I might be able to buy it off my friend. How do I use it? On the side note, I tried putting a fake StarFox Assault into the Wii that my friend got in China but it spit it back out. Thanks.

  6. dbxz:

Action replay is really just a device that changes the game so that you can cheat in it. So for example if u wanted infinite ammo in a game you could use an Action Replay. But since it changes memory within games this can potentially be used to exploit the game console as well.

i’m not clear on the first bit is there a way that you can download a wii emulater to pc then copy a wii game in nero and then burn to disk and then play it on the wii.

    Comment — January 23, 2007 @ 5:05 pm

  8. dbxz:

    @ Robert
Im not quite sure of what you are asking but i’ll do my best to answer your question.

nero will not copy a Wii game. it will not even extract a game from a game disc. (in fact it takes 50 hours to extract a wii game from a game disc at the moment. )

And even if u managed to make a copy the Wii would actually know that it isnt the real disc.

it allows you to run an emulator on your wii. Such as a Super Nintendo emulator.

So if u wanted to play super nintendo games on your wii you could using the above method.

And doesn’t the Wii just use regular SD cards? What’s the adapter?

Just trying to understand… I would love to fire up some emulators on the Wii and play some of my old games again without having to use my computer. Can you maybe give some more details on this process? it’s a little vague… something like this would also be worthy of screenshots to help slower people along :) .

There’s good news! Wii modchips are finally hitting the market and you wont need an AR or SD card + SD card loader.

I’ll get a shop going very soon so you can buy the chip directly from this website and pay cash at your door when the chip is delivered.

I hate giving out credit card info on the internet so I think cash on delivery is awesome!

[…] True Nintendo Wii homebrew is inching forward day by day and with this latest release from datel you are able to launch GameCube homebrew natively on the Wii. Before we had to enter countless numbers of Action Replay codes to run homebrew using the AR method. But now all you need to do is merely plug the Datel SDmedia launcher device in. This means that you now have much faster access to any homebrew applications such as Emulators. Sadly the device does not yet support Wii homebrew just yet but it is most defiantly a step in the right direction. There’s a wealth of really excellent home brew material out there for the GameCube, but how do you get it to run on your happening console? Our GameCube/Wii SD Media Launcher has the answer… […]

Hi, I’ve been looking for an answer to this questions about PAL Wii pre-modded with wiikey.

The question: Do all homebrew ROMs running through the SNES9x GX emulator for Wii in gamecube mode default to 50hz? It does display them in 60hz, right? I’ve heard horror stories about Virtual Console roms being 50hz only. I don’t want homebrew roms having the same problem.

I hope someone can help me. I’m stumped here. Thanks.

I like the idea of playing old emu’s on your wii, it reminds me of the wii’s virtual consoles and how you can already play all the old roms on it from most of the systems, What i want to see is a WII EMULATOR, a program for my PC that emulates the nintendo wii so i can play all those roms on my PC with out the need to buy a wii, i would still buy the controls, you’d have to, I am currently up to PS2, my PC plays some PS2 stuff. I rekon you should work on this more so than playing hacked roms on the wii console, theres rumors of a xbox 360 emulator for PC can’t find it though

  50. zfan121:

Great work, few questions about emulation. Should be easy to answer.
!:Do I have to be a coding master to do this without screwing things up? I can run an action replay, and I know a bit of Visual BASIC does that help?
2:Would this render my wii in-operable?
3:How, where and when do I get this?
4:Let’s see, you should list EXACTLY as many of the possibilities of emulation. Just for fun.
5:I won’t do this until I know for sure it’s not going to get me in any “legal” trouble. Seriously guys, these are important facts.
I check my e-mail like every day, so respond when you feel like it. But the sooner the better. Man, can’t wait to start twisting my wii games…er without screwing the game or the Wii up of course. That’s a good question too.
