Once these units were replaced both problems went away. The radio side works fine and everything else on the steering wheel works fine. We shall see how they work.

This tells me the electrical system basically works, but something is inhibiting it for whatever reason.

I would think it might be the button...but that can't be it if it works immediately after turning it off then back on.
