After a lot of checking I actually found that In Internet Settings you used to be able to log onto the SMTP server using the same credentials as the Incoming POP.VIRGIN.NET Return to the Servers tab, and check the box next to My server requires authentication. I changed my password for personal confidence and logged out, and back into Webmail to check it was OK. For Virgin Media, the custom SMTP domain would simply be virginmedia.com to match the domain of your email address. There is an email fault listed on the status page currently2.
